Lincoln police arrested a man for what they are considering a hate crime.

Officer Katie Flood says Sgt. Mike Ripley was driving by the Q Bar around 1:40 a.m. Friday morning when he noticed two men in a verbal fight. Flood says Ripley was walking toward the two men when the victim tried to get away from a man later identified as 21-year-old Luke Stevens, who is a student at UNL.

As the officer approached both men, Flood says Stevens actually punched the victim in the face. She says there was a struggle with officers, and Stevens was taken down to the ground and arrested.

"The victim and several witnesses reported that Luke Stevens did not know them," Flood says. "He started calling them derogatory names based on their sexual orientation. It was clear that he was trying to entice a fight."

Stevens was lodged for assault, disturbing the peace and failure to comply. Flood says he could be facing a much more serious situation.

"There is a state statute that allows for enhanced penalties specifically when it comes to hate crimes," Flood says. "In this case the 3rd degree assault will be enhanced to a class four felony."

Flood says Travis Garrett, who is a friend of Stevens, was also cited for disturbing the peace. According to Flood, both the victim and Stevens were in the bar earlier, but the incident occurred outside the bar.

Hate crimes are a big issue, you can't hurt somebody based on their race, sexual orientation, gender, etc. and for all you people who think that is ok then you are wrong. I went to High School with this guy, so I know him, and he most likely hit the guy because the guy was gay. I have heard him say terrible things about gays and blacks, he is a very hateful person towards people who are different than him. He deserves everything that the court gives him. He grew up in a town where he could do no wrong, if he did do something wrong he never got in trouble for it so he thought that he could go to Lincoln and get away with whatever he wanted to there and he learned the hard way that he can't.

Every assault should be a hate crime. I usually hate the people I pick fights with. He souldn't have picked the fight but at the same time its wrong to be gay. You have a choice. You just don't have the will power to not have sex. I can see where he would have picked a fight. Our society is becoming too tolerant of people that are doing things that are wrong. If you believe for one minute its ok you'll probably burn in hell too.

If crime is crime, and there is no need for distinctions such as "hate crimes", then there is equally no need for the distinction between misdemeanors and felonies. Crime is crime, right? Speeding is no different from murder by that reasoning. Life isn't black and white. Circumstances and severities differ, and so must our application of laws and consequences.

I am sorry about those who need to express their disillusionment against 'Christianity'. Unfortunately, many people have used the guise of the church as a means to do evil things. The concern that I have is that we who follow the Christ need real clarity on a few things. First, all sin is sin. Second, all sin has consequences and separates from God. Third, not a single one of us can walk rightly before God by our own strength, either before or after we have eternal life. Lastly, for this reason God offers life for free, and apart from our effort, apart from the law, apart from works, by faith in the one who provides deliverance, Jesus the Christ. This provides a pattern for life in that we do not hold ourselves above another who fails because we know that our failure runs just as deep and the only way we have life is by the free gift of God. This said, we still must call evil as it is, should that be sodomy, speeding, disrespect, pride... and share the only hope we have.

I agree with Kingston. I don't think anyone has ever assaulted a person because they liked them. And for everyone attacking Christianity over this, grow up. Not every subject is an opening for you to voice your anti Christian opinion. I don't think it is healthy to be gay, male or female, but that's my opinion and not my job to judge or punish.

I know this isn't the popular response, but although what the kid allegedly did is horrible, I don't believe that it should be enhanced to a felony. I think the term "hate crime" is silly. There are a ton of reasons people fight, the majority aren't good... to say that punching a guy in the face because he was wearing too much blue is less of a crime then punching him because he is gay is ridiculous when you think about it. I do think communities that have been targeted in the past do need protection... but that protection should start with education and awareness, not with prioritzing victims.

hey, derf- betcha don't have a problem with a woman laying with a woman, do ya? especially if they are both hot? ahhhh... those double standards...

man should not lay with man. If a christian believes this and the gay does not then maybe both should be charged with hate crimes

The kid never stepped foot into this gay bar he was walking by on his way to his car with some friends and was called out by some people! Im guessing alot of you people posting have no idea about christianity anyway. You people just need to get the story straight before you going and making some of the remarks you have been!

Question for all you " christians " What would Jesus do? He hung around some real characters of the time. So all you agnostic christians keep on reading the edited version of the Bible.(edited by one of the early popes) And back to the subject at hand. Sounds like someone went looking for trouble.

Aside from the fact this story has nothing to do with christianity, I think those 'christians' who hate because a book tells them to should be prosecuted for both discrimination and hate crimes. I have a book that says 'christians' are actually the evil entities on this earth, sent to cause hate and discontent among those who believe in peace in love. Is my book wrong, all you gay-bashing 'christians'? And if so, what makes your book right and mine wrong?

Ann, I suppose the Crusades aren't classified as a hate crime because it was a Christian movement?

In my opinion, "hate crime" legislation is being overly used in our society today. We should return to the Common Law system of justice in which a crime is a crime is a crime-- the identity of the potential victim should not matter because criminal behavior itself is the real issue.
