Government agencies are seeking broad new authority to ramp up killings and removals of gray wolves in the Northern Rockies and Great Lakes, despite recent court actions restoring the animal's endangered status across most of the country.

Various proposals would gas pups in their dens, surgically sterilize adult wolves and allow "conservation" hunts to drive down the predators' numbers.

Once exterminated across most of the West, wolves made a remarkable comeback in recent decades.

Yet as packs continue to multiply, their taste for livestock is stoking a backlash.

Wildlife officials say that without public wolf hunting, agencies need greater latitude to eliminate problem packs.

Wolf advocates say the response to marauding wolves is too heavy-handed.

I don't think we can depend on natural selection anymore to control the populations of both wolves and their normal prey animals. Humanity's impact is too big. We really have no choice but to remain involved and yes, cull animals sometimes. Better that than lose them all don't you think?

Wolves are voracious eaters and natural killing machines. They kill livestock and other animals purely for entertainment with no intentions of eating it. They are decimating the elk and moose populations in the Yellowstone area. I'm not suggesting they be completely eliminated, but they have no competition to keep them in check naturally. Something needs to be done. All you tree huggers think these animals deserve more protection than other game animals like elk and deer that are a food source for thousands. I can't understand that. Without a hunting season to control them, they will continue to proliferate and reduce other species.
