Lincoln police arrested a man Sunday following a disturbance at a weekend family get-together.
Officer Katie Flood says 40-year-old Kevin Birdsong was lodged Sunday night and cited for 2nd degree assault, use of a weapon to commit a felony, assault, disturbing the peace, vandalism and theft.
Flood says it all happened Sunday evening around 6:45 p.m. in the 700 block of Garfield Street. Flood says family and friends were gathered for a bar-b-que, when an argument broke out concerning Kevin Birdsong's disrespect to a woman. Flood says Birdsong punched a 46-year-old man in the face twice, and then he was told to leave by the others at the gathering.
Flood says Birdsong marched up the street and grabbed wooden bat from an 11-year-old boy, then threatened his brother. Flood says Birdsong hit the passenger side of his brother's car, breaking a window, and shattering the glass. Flood says after all of this, the boy actually asked for his bat back. She says it was recovered and given back to the boy.
Police Chief Tom Casady said during the morning briefing that this assault was one of 68 total assault calls that police responded to on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. He indicated this was an unusually high number.
