Just before 1:00 a.m. officers were called to what was reported as a burglary in progress in an apartment complex at 8323 Sunridge Rd. As officers responded, they were told that the suspect was still inside with the victim in another room.

According to Lincoln Police Sergeant Randy Clark, when officers arrived, they confronted 41-year-old Roosevelt Evans of Lincoln, just outside the apartment door, which had been kicked in, and took him into custody after a struggle. Once outside, Evans resisted getting into the police cruiser until he was overcome by officers. Evans then refused to be placed in a seat belt by laying down on his back in the seat and kicking at officers.

Clark said that because of all the resistance Evans had presented, they called Lincoln Fire and Rescue with the intention of placing Evans on a backboard and transporting him to jail once he was strapped in. Clark said that this method is a resource tool officers are allowed to use for particularly resistant suspects.

Just as fire crews arrived, Evans finally allowed officers to place him in a seat belt and close the door. According to Sgt. Clark, that is when Evans turned in his seat and kicked out the rear passenger side window. Multiple officers then held Evans until they could get leg restraints in place to keep control of his feet as he was transported.

Sgt. Clark said the officer then left the apartment complex heading to the jail. Shortly after leaving, Evans was able to work his legs free and began kicking again. The officer who transported Evans said he kicked the rear window as well as the frame to the already broken side window.

The investigation lead to information that there was a relationship between Evans and the victim. Clark said Evans is in custody on a variety of charges including domestic assault, vandalism to the apartment door, resisting arrest, vandalism to the police cruiser, trespassing and child neglect. Clark shared that the child neglect charges are applied since there was an 8 and 11-year-old inside at the time Evans entered the apartment.

Clark said the only injuries were to Evans. He was injured as he entered the apartment and he had an injury to his leg which is attributed to kicking the window and interior of the cruiser.

Damage to the door is unknown, damage to the police window is valued at about $500.
