"It's an incredibly generous gift, it's wonderful," longtime Husker fan Clare Nelson just heard the news. Charles and Romona Myers donated five million dollars to the University's Athletic Department. The single, largest gift in history.
Charles Myers says, "we think it's okay to receive but we think you've also got to give something back and so that's what we're doing here." Charles and Romona have been attending Husker football games for more than thirty years. They thought this was the perfect time to donate, "When our team isn't doing well that's not the time to give them hell, that's the time to stand up and support them."
The Myers donation will go toward a performance center that includes a strength complex, football locker room and the athletic medicine facilities. "Athletic Director Steve Pederson says, "this will become the epicenter for outstanding performance and helping student athletes realize their athletic dreams."
UNL Chancellor Harvey Perlman, "this is a terrific gift, it demonstrates a confidence in future of athletic department and understanding of what it is that's needed to support student athletes and to recruit student athletes."
The Myers hope their donation will encourage others to give money to Husker athletics.
Fan Clare Nelson says, "considering the economic times it's incredibly generous and very admirable and I think the University should be grateful to the Myers."
The performance center will be named in honor of the Myers. The center is for student athletes and will be inside of the Tom and Nancy Osborne athletic complex. That building will be completed by fall of 2006. The University has so far recieved 20 million dollars in private gifts toward the fifty million dollar project and they are still accepting donations.
