The Beatrice City Council has denied a $1,200 claim from one of its members over his arrest on suspicion of drunken driving.
Councilman Alan Fetty had asked the city to reimburse him for expenses related to his Jan. 18 arrest. He said he incurred legal costs and endured public humiliation.
But last week, the council denied his claim with a 2-5 vote.
Police arrested Fetty on suspicion of DUI after stopping his vehicle for failure to use his turn signal. But, the drunken-driving charge was never filed because Fetty's blood-alcohol level was 0.077, below the legal limit of 0.08.
Fetty is a longtime member of the council and former council president who was re-elected in November after running unopposed. His term expires in 2012.

Thanks heavens common sense prevailed. Mr. Fetty needs to realize he is personally responsible for his behavior and can't expect others to pay for his mistakes.
