Engineering leaders from around the world are in Lincoln this week to discuss wind power.

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers is holding a conference to discuss the latest technological developments for both the electrical generation and processing of the harvested energy.

The Midwest's wind is not only a clean way to generate power, but it's also good for the area's economy.

"Certain areas of the state, particularly rural communities, that have in general a loss of population, a loss of economic activity, this is a way that provides energy, provides jobs to infuse money back into those economies and actually stabilize population," said Jerry Hudgins, the chairman for the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Dept. of Electrical Engineering.

this sounds like a good conference. wind energy helps stimulate the local economy by putting money in the landowners pocket and also bringing hundreds of people in to build them. small town bars and businesses are very beneficial from all these workers and plus if you look at northwest iowa, northeast nebraska, and wyoming you'll notice these windmills are becoming a important power source. the 2 small ones in lincoln are nothing compared to a up and running wind farm elsewhere.

Eyesore is an opinion. High maintenance and lack of dependable energy is fact. They should be working on how to tap thermal earth power. Why can't they spend millions on digging a hole?

They don't because it sucks and is still an unhknown science. The initial cost is huge. The maintenance is constant. They are an eyesore. The peak wind and peak electrical need don't line up. It is undependable. You can't regulate it well. To speak against this is political suicide right now. Don't even get going on ethanol. Best thing that happened was Government pulling out. Don't get me wrong, Study and build but they are far from an alternative source. Boys talk to the industry that doesn't answer to Lincoln or to the university. NPPD and OPPD.

Yea, I've noticed that also way too much maintenence. I have tried to contact LES about wind turbines for in-town use and received no responce either. For a Public Utility they are not very open.

I think it is a hoot that this conference is being held in Lincoln. I find it a hoot because every time I drive I80 past the LES wind mills they are never running. LES was so proud erecting them, yet anymore it seems like they are never running. Why is that LES?
