The 2009 Cornhusker State Games are underway after Friday night's opening ceremony at Lincoln's Seacrest Field. Executive Director Dave Mlnarik said the organization tried to make this year's event extra special for the 25th anniversary celebration.
"It is celebrating our history, so when you look at our opening ceremony you'll see all our past athletes invited back to participate as the parade marshals. You'll see the co-founders come back to be the honorary chairs. You see little things like special collectors edition silver shirts instead of the usual white cotton shirt," said Mlnarik.
The opening ceremony had the usual skydivers, parade of athletes and lighting of the torch.
"This is getting it kicked off in a special way. We've got two weekends of competition and athletes and their families are here, it's all about getting in the spirit of the games and it sets the tone right away that this is about fun, so that's what I really like about it," he said.
