Children can't vote, can't have credit and certainly can't drive. But don't tell six-year-old Ethan Teply what he can and can't do. One day Ethan decided he wanted to raise money for cancer research so when he said jump, more than 100 classic car owners said... where do we park.
It'll be ten years before Ethan can legally turn a car key.
"I love cars," said Ethan.
However, combine that passion with the love for his father and you get a little boy whose compassion is the proverbial cure for cancer.
"I was diagnosed with colon cancer in 1997, so we've been battling cancer since then," said Ethan's father Eric Teply. "Even for the last two years I've been going through chemo."
Then, one night on a drive home from a Relay for Life meeting with his father Eric, Ethan had a very adult idea.
"I want to put on a car show," said Ethan.
"And what are we going to do with all the money," asked his father.
"Give it to the American Cancer Society," Ethan replied.
Before long, Ethan's goal of 50 cars became nearly 150. Thirty-one sponsors joined in. Now, Ethan's quite possibly the most charitable six year old in the state.
"It feels awesome. It makes me proud of my boy to see that his idea of a car show [has] a parking lot full of cars and people coming out and donating money," said Eric.
His peers, both young and old, are proud too.
"He has lots of favorite cars here and I have lots of favorite cars here," said Ethan's seven-year-old friend Max Smith.
"We're big supporters of cancer research and finding a cure for cancer. Our mom's had cancer about 4 times," said Nick Blakesley, who brought a car to show.
But Ethan doesn't want the credit.
"Why do I have to talk on the news and radio so much?" Ethan asked his dad during an interview.
He just wants a cure and a healthy dad.
"A lot of the money given to Relay for Life over the 25 years has made it possible for me to be here with my son and my wife," said Eric.
The Lincoln Rebels Car Club helped put on the show. Each entry cost $10 and 100 percent of that benefits Relay for Life.
