Grand Island's Heartland Events Center is at the top of the Nebraska Department of Economic Development's list to receive $500,000 in grants.

The Events Center was picked as the top project over 20 other applications to receive money as part of the state Legislature's Local Civic, Cultural and Convention Center Financing Fund.

About $31 million has been raised to build the center. Project cost is $35 million. The facility will host performing arts events, conventions and athletic contests.

The next step is formal approval by the Legislature. State Senator Ray Aguilar of Grand Island said he expects the funding to be approved even though state budgets are tight.

Construction is planned to begin in the summer of 2004.
