The Lincoln City Council has passed a water-down version of a smoking ban proposal.

As originally proposed, the ordinance would have banned smoking in most all workplaces. It would have made Lincoln the first city in Nebraska to ban smoking in bars and restaurants.

But the amended version adopted on a five-to-two vote will allow smoking inside bars where food makes up less than 60 percent of total sales.

Bar owners said they were pleased with the comprise. Health officials said they were not happy.

The ban will take effect in six months.
