The sentencing phase for convicted murdered Jorge Galindo begins Thursday.

Galindo was convicted Wednesday in Madison County District Court on five counts of first-degree murder in last year's bank slayings.

The same jury will start hearing evidence Thursday to decide whether it believes the case merits the death penalty. If so, a three-judge panel would hand down a sentence of life in prison or death in the electric chair.

Defense attorney Doug Stratton told the jury in his summary remarks that the killings were not planned. Stratton called it a robbery gone horribly bad.

The jury deliberated for about two hours after receiving the case.
