An endowment for families of officers killed in the line of duty has been proposed in tandem with a law enforcement memorial being built in Grand Island.

The endowment, proposed by Seward County Sheriff Joe Yocum, would make money immediately available for families of slain police officers.

Yocum is president of the Nebraska Law Enforcement Memorial committee, which is currently building a monument in Grand Island.

While Yocum says larger communities, such as Omaha and recently slain officer Jason Pratt, give a huge outpouring of support, he worries about smaller communities where there aren't as many people to attend fundraisers and fewer officers around to help raise money.
