A nine-year-old rural Hartington boy has died after a .22 caliber rifle went off in the basement of his family's home.

Cedar County Sheriff Larry Koranda says Alex Wiebelhaus was transported to Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, South Dakota, where he was later pronounced dead. The sheriff's office received the call from the home northeast of Hartington at 3:57 p.m. Monday afternoon.

Koranda says the death is being treated as an accident, pending an autopsy.
