Property Taxes

That is the greatest single year percentage hike in 14 years.

State Property Tax Administrator Cathy Lang says the increase is primarily due to cuts in aid by the Legislature and increases in taxes by those affected to make up the difference.

The figures released Friday were for property taxes levied last year due to be paid in 2004. The impact on any individual taxpayer depends on where that person is located and what the local taxes are.

The Legislature cut aid to schools, cities, counties and others last year to deal with the state's faltering economy and reductions in sales and income tax revenue.

Property taxes are levied and spent locally.
