A rollover crash on a rural road in southern Nebraska has killed an 8-year-old girl and her dad.
Clay County authorities say 34-year-old Jesus Medina-Gonzalez and daughter Vanessa Medina were pronounced dead Sunday at the scene of the accident.
Sheriff Jeff Franklin says Medina-Gonzalez was driving his sport utility vehicle when he lost control on a gravel road and it rolled three times about 2 1/2 miles northwest of Inland.
Franklin says there were six related people in the SUV, all from Harvard. They were headed to a soccer game in Grand Island.
Medina-Gonzalez, his daughter and another girl were not wearing seat belts and were thrown from the SUV.
The four others were treated for minor injuries at a Hastings hospital.

There is a great event coming up to raise money for seat belt awareness: Saturday, September 12 @ 8:00 a.m. Erika's Fun Run - Communty Wellness Center in Cozad Nebraska. Erika was only 16 when she was killed in a crash she would have survived if she had not been partially ejected from the vehicle. ThesE accidents happen WAY TOO OFTEN! Come to the Fun Run and help raise awareness! Thanks!
Again, the price of not wearing seat belts. This is so sad, but people just haven't gotten the message somehow. Are there any demonstrations available to the public to show them what happens to the human body after being thrown around the inside of a rolling vehicle until finally ejected through a broken window or door? The CHP has what is called a "rollover trailer" that is brought to various sites where the public is in attendance. Every time the unrestrained dummy flies out, sometimes with leg still caught in the vehicle, there is an audible gasp from the viewers. It is easy to see that they have no idea about this. The deaths are counted, but those with injuries may go through life with horrible effects that can never be righted. People of Nebraska --please listen to the pleas of the professionals who know more about seat belt usage than you do. They want you to stay as safe as possible on the road, instead of your family at a funeral home selecting your casket.
