Even though two high-profile candidates have bowed out of the race for Congress this week, plenty of others still remain.

Tuesday, Republican Lt. Gov. Dave Heinemen announced that he would not run.

Democratic state Sen. Chris Beutler bowed out on Monday.

The Democrats have three announced candidates to replace retiring Congressman Doug Bereuter. They are state Senator Matt Connealy of Decatur, Fremont attorney Janet Stewart and Schuyler businessman Phil Chase.

Bereuter has thrown his support behind Curt Bromm, the Republican Speaker of the Legislature.

Bromm is to announce his candidacy Thursday.

Bereuter has been in Congress since 1978 and has been re-elected every two years with at least 60-percent of the vote.
