Nebraska Public Power District plans to spend $10-million by the end of October to upgrade security at its Brownville nuclear power plant in response to a mandate from the Nuclear Regulatory commission.

NPPD already has spent more than $8-million over the past two years making security improvements and increasing staffing at its Cooper Nuclear Station following the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

Utility Vice President of Nuclear Programs Clay Warren said upgrades include new vehicle barriers, new fencing and gating, infrared and motion sensing cameras, as well as increased training of personnel to increase their ability to respond.
