The Nebraska State Patrol bomb squad says a homemade bomb found under a pickup in Hastings Monday was not an ordinary, run-of-the-mill device.
Patrol Captain Fred Ruiz says it was rather sophisticated. He also says had it gone up when detonated, quote, "It would have destroyed the vehicle as well as anyone in or nearby it."
The bomb was found by a neighbor passing by about 8 a.m. Monday under the right front passenger tire of the truck.
Authorities say the device resembled a pipe bomb. The patrol's bomb squad was summoned, studied the device and detonated it about 3 p.m.
Homes within two to three blocks were evacuated before the bomb was triggered by patrol technicians.
There was little damage to the truck.
Ruix says federal authorities likely would be contacted in the investigation.
