A legislative committee heard arguments for legalizing mini-trucks and other off-road vehicles. Mini-trucks and ATV-type vehicles aren't allowed on Nebraska roads because they don't fall under any standards outlined by the state.

The vehicles are commonly used in rural settings. Some believe allowing these vehicles on roads would be handy for farmers and ranchers moving between fields.

"I feel strongly that Nebraska should be the next state to adopt legislation to allow mini-trucks to be registered, insured, licensed and driven in this state," said Keith Wasem of Aurora.

Others believe, however, the off-road vehicles pose a safety concern.

"It's our duty to try a find a balance between the need the public has, the demand for smaller more fuel efficient vehicles and public safety. We're talking about 2500 lb vehicles operating out on the roadways. They are dangerous in many respects, almost all respects," said Beverly Neth, director of the Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles.

Neth says the vehicles should have to meet passenger vehicle standards.

More than 12 states allow mini-trucks on some roads.

these little trucks are every bit as safe as a full size truck. Taxes are taxes so lets let the consumer decide what he wants to drive and then tax accordingly. 35-55 mpg is hard to beat and these little trucks will haul 1500lbs of pay load. people need to use their common sense before condeming everything. State always shoots down money generating ideas such as a drag strip race track and so on, listen to the tax payers well be careing for you soon enough.

they are illigal now..so quit abusing that..when/if they become legal..use them then..abusing it now will not force the issue of making them legal..abusing it now only puts unecessary pressure on law enforcement and criminal justtice agencies...using drugs won't make it legal..illegal gambling won't make that legal..driving toy vehicles or illegal vehicles won't make them legal..quit already..ATV's and Snow mobiles are legal under specific guidelines...they are abused an they need to be ticketed..whats next...go carts..toy scooters...motorized skate boards...how about them segways..what about my lawn tractor..??enough

Why shouldn't the mini-truck be allowed on the roads? I fail to see why these are any more unsafe than motorcyles, scooters, golf carts and ATV's that are being driven on the roads now. Sure some of them are not "supposed to be on the roads" but they are. They are all motorized and every darn one of them SHOULD BE TAXED. The mini-trucks are a heck of a lot easier to see than a motorcyle, scooter or golf cart.

Instead of people telling me what is safe and what isn't, how about you let me decide what is safe and let me accept responsibility for my own actions? It's called defensive driving. And if I hurt someone with my vehicle, then it's my responsibility. If the state wants taxes to keep up the roads, that's fine. They should allow golf carts, ATVs, etc. and reap the taxes. Then you stiffen penalties for unsafe behaviour so that you have a bonafide consequence for it. I don't care if someone can't see me. That's MY job to make sure I'm seen. It's not someone else's job to look out after my safety. The world is full of people who can't think logically and they allow government to decide issues that government shouldn't even be allowed to decide.

As much as this state loves to tax motor vehicles, I can't even imagine why this won't eventually become law to allow these vehicles on the roads. Just another way for the government to take your money.

They use them as play things, not to save gas. They are dangerous and come out of no where before you can see them. There would be more accidents and deaths, if allowed on public streets. Neither ATV's or the mini-trucks should be allowed. They rear the front wheels off the ground and try to drive that way down the street. They should be illegal to manufacture them.
