At their meeting Wednesday evening the Malone Center Board named Tami Soper the new director.

Soper was actively involved with the center as a youth.

For the past ten years she worked as a non-profit consultant for state organizations. Soper is also involved in community organizing and resource developing for region five systems.

Soper takes over just as the Malone Center could be getting new life. The current building is sinking into the ground and in need of repairs according to a city inspection.

It’s got some wear and tear that to put the money to get it back up to speed is probably better invested in a new facility,” said Board Chairman Ed Wimes.

Lincoln Parks and Recreation believes a new facility could revitalize the central Lincoln neighborhood.

“With the improvements that come with the Antelope Valley Project there will be an expanded Trago Park in this location. Plus there will be a trail system that will provide a connection for the neighborhoods in this area to get to Trago Park and the facility,” said Parks Director Lynn Johnson.

The new facility would likely house a gym, fitness center, game room, day care, computer lab and pool.

The board says there is much more work to be done. If the plan moves forward the construction would be completed in 3 to 4 years.
