A 3-year-old mare shot in the head over the weekend is expected to survive.

The horse suffered brain swelling and has lost some motor skills following Sunday's shooting near Hastings. Owners Scott and Shelley Rystrom say it's unknown what permanent damage the mare could be left with, but they're trying to stay positive.

Authorities believe the mare was shot with a .22-caliber rifle. A weapon hasn't been recovered.

A 17-year-old boy was arrested for possible involvement in the case. A 15-year-old boy was questioned and released to his parents Sunday. The 17-year-old remains in custody at a juvenile center in Lincoln.

Adams County Sheriff Gregg Magee says he is unsure what charges either teenager may face in the shooting.

I'M ON FIRE WITH ANGER. GOD HELP THE HORSE. THE PEOPLE INVOLVED KNOW WHO THEY ARE AND ONE DAY THEY WILL PAY FOR WHAT THEY DID. THEY WILL BE CAUGHT SOON BECAUSE JERKS LIKE THIS ARE STUPID AND IGNORANT.

to know you know more than i. i was just commenting on the precieved overreaction of angela. i know nothing of the case, as is the usual story behind everyone's comments/blogs/whatever people use to put others down on the internet nowadays. i hope the person/persons responsible are punished accordingly. horses, as with any pet, are very socially friendly animals. that and they cost much, MUCH more than a dog or cat. they obviously have not done anything to deserve being shot. i hope the horse makes it as best he can. .22 are tricky little bullets. im surprised (but GLAD) that he survived. best wishes to the horse and his caretakers

sooooo, You have to be kidding!! Yes it is a horse! Next it will be something else. This horse is only a three year old and has very valuble bloodlines. There were children learning to ride in that area. I have had pets shot by stupid, impulsive kids. Not pleasant to deal with. At least one will be contained. News is he has done it before!

.....angela, are you suggesting that we throw them in a maximum security prison and tote them around on handcarts with straight jackets and masks? calm down. it's a horse. it isn't even dead. i do hope that they somehow figure out who pulled the trigger though. there is punishment needed, but serial killers? c'mon. impulsive thinking is destroying society too, not just kids

All I can say is, "What kind of kids are we raising these days?"

I certainly hope the parents of the accused realize these kind of actions cause serial killers!!!! I hope they are punished accordingly!
