State senators are scrambling to figure out how to deal with a $315 million budget shortfall.

The budget-writing Appropriations Committee planned to meet late Tuesday to discuss a plan.

It had been working on a proposal to plug a $211 million shortfall. But on Friday a pessimistic economic forecasting board increased to shortfall by $104 million.

That sends Governor Mike Johanns and the Legislature back to the drawing board.

The budget must be advanced for debate by March 10.
