Discount giant Wal-Mart is planning to build a supercenter in Seward. The supercenter stores are part grocery and discount stores combined. The plan calls for a 99,000 square foot building, double the size of its current 44,000-foot building.

Wal-Mart says their Seward store is too crowded and the only way to eliminate those problems is to build bigger and better. However, the supercenter concept is not being welcomed with open arms.

Mark Kolterman, member of Seward's Hometown Merchants says when a giant like Wal-Mart moves in it takes away from downtown businesses. Kolterman says it is inevitable Wal-Mart will move in, and he says businesses will survive, but it will be difficult.

Wal-Mart's plan is to be addressed March 8 at a Seward planning commission meeting. Once the planning commission decides on permits the plan will then go on to the Seward city council.
