Rep. Doug Bereuter's decision to resign Sept. 1 will not require a special election to replace him.

Secretary of State John Gale says the seat can remain vacant in the second year of a two year House term until the regular general election in November.

Bereuter, a Republican from Nebraska, will miss 14 scheduled legislative days between Sept. 7 and Oct. 1.

Congress adjourns at that point for the November elections and Christmas break before a new session begins in January.

Bereuter spokeswoman Carol Lawrence says Bereuter's staff will remain until January, handling any constituent concerns.

Bereuter says he will resign this year after 26 years in the House. He has taken a job as president of the Asia Foundation, a nonprofit organization that aims to promote peace in the Asia-Pacific region.
