From red warty thing and cotton candy, to jack-be-littles and dill's atlantic giant, all types of pumpkins are popping up at the Oehlerking Elmwood Punkin Patch.
"It's just a good, bright fall autumn color and adds a smile to everybody's face," said Carae Oehlerking.
Nine years ago, after their dairy business went sour, the Oehlerkings decided they needed to try a new trade. When a trip to Wisconsin led them to a profitable pumpkin patch, they decided to bring the patch back to Elmwood, literally.
"We brought some of the pumpkins back and we saved those seeds then and those were some of our starting stock that we used," said Jack Oehlerking.
Now, the popular, prized pumpkin can be seen scattered about their property every fall, price tag and all.
Whether you want a small pumpkin from the $1 bin, or maybe a larger one from the $2 bin, or maybe an even bigger one from the $3 bin, or a large one from the $4 bin, all payments are made on the honor system.
"We feel there's good in everybody and we hope we can trust everybody and to our knowledge we never lost any pumpkins."
Punkin patch perusers can pay for their pumpkins simply by dropping the suggested amount into the tin can firmly fastened to the front sign - a system the Oehlerkings feel confident about.
"We believe in Nebraska. That's what we have is the trust and the honor," said the Oehlerkings.
And you can bet as fall turns into winter, the punkin patch partners will still be hard at work producing precise pumpkin patch preparations.
"We'll start to order pumpkin seeds probably in January again and get ready for next year then."
The "Punkin Patch" is located at the intersection of O Street at 286th Street, east of Lincoln.
They're open from dawn until dusk until the end of October.
