The Grant and Wheatland public schools are getting closer to merging their districts.

Grant Superintendent Kirk Russell said all the formalities aside, it looks as though the schools could be merged by the time school starts up next fall.

The consolidation agreement entails creating a nine-member board. It proposes keeping K-6 elementary schools in Madrid and in Grant but taking the 7th and 8th graders to Madrid and moving the high school to Grant.
