Kearney residents may soon have a new place to sit back and smell the popcorn.
Hilltop Four Theaters has announced plans for a major expansion of the city's movie theater - something city officials said has been much needed.
Theater owner Carmike Cinemas of Atlanta intends to build four additional screens at Hilltop Mall and convert the existing theater into an eight-screen megaplex.
That means the project will also bring stadium seating, digital sound and a new concessions area.
Officials expect the theater to be open in October or November.
Kearney Area Chamber of Commerce President Roger Jasnoch said surveys and public meetings have pointed to a new theater as one of the city's greatest needs.
Jasnoch said the Kearney's young population, which includes about 6400 college students, has increased interest in a megaplex theater in the past five years.
