U.S. District Judge Laurie Smith Camp sentenced Jonathan R. Franklin on Monday. The judge also ordered him to pay almost $17,000 in restitution to the banks as well as a $300 special assessment.

Court documents said on June 17, 2003, Franklin walked into a U.S. Bank branch inside a Baker's Supermarket in Omaha and pointed a semiautomatic handgun at a teller's head demanding money. Almost $2,000 was taken during the robbery.

The U.S. Attorney's office said a little less than a month later, Franklin and two others entered the Commercial Federal Bank in Omaha while a fourth waited in a getaway car in the alley. Franklin and another man jumped the teller counter. Franklin again pointed a handgun at the tellers and the group took off with $14,873.

Franklin was arrested on Sept. 4, 2003, on two federal counts of bank robbery and one count of using a firearm in a violent crime. He has been held in custody since his arrest.
