The Humane Society of the United States wants the International House of Pancakes to stop claiming the eggs it uses are "cruelty free."

The animal welfare group filed complaints Wednesday with the Federal Trade Commission and the Securities and Exchange Commission, saying the restaurant chain's claims on its Web site mislead consumers and investors.

The move comes after Humane Society officials failed to convince IHOP officials to buy at least some of its eggs from cage-free producers. The group then engaged supporters in a letter-writing campaign.

In response, IHOP wrote on its Web site that its animals are raised humanely and "with dignity."

The Humane Society says those words do not accurately describe hens kept in cages so cramped the birds can't move.
