Columbus High School teacher Jerry Meyer is in Afghanistan on military duty. And he finds himself teaching again.

Meyer says shortly after arriving in that war-torn country he saw a definite need in Afghan schools. He says students do not have pencils, chalk or paper. He says his assessment of the textbooks left much to be desired.

Meyer says the latest English language books were published in the 1970s and show some interesting pictures of what Americans are supposed to look like.

He says English language tutorials, math texts and basic school supplies are in great need. He is asking people to donate those supplies to share with Afghan students.

They can do so by sending boxes to Jerry Meyer, School Supplies, 45th Infantry Brigade E, Camp Phoenix, APO AE 09356.
