Councilman Terry Werner has proposed an ordinance which would require businesses that contract with the city to pay their employees a poverty level wage.
The proposal requires that companies with at least 10 employees and has a contract of 25-thousand dollars a piece to pay their employees $8.85 an hour. For companies that don’t provide health insurance, they would have to pay their employees $9.73 an hour.
The Chamber of Commerce says it undermines the economic development effort that's been started in the community.
Werner says this ordinance is fair and that the city has to set the proper example.
There will be a public hearing on this ordinance Monday at 5:30. The vote could take place March first.
