Sales or Income Taxes Could Increase

After spending a couple of days debating various tax increase plans, lawmakers have narrowed the list down to raising the sales tax and or the income tax.

One proposal to issue bonds and pay for them with higher gas taxes has been withdrawn.

Lawmakers also voted to do away with a proposal to impose a surcharge on electric bills.

That leaves raising sales taxes a quarter cent for a year and bolstering income taxes five-percent.

The proposal by Sen. Ray Janssen of Nickerson would generate about $112 million.

Some senators argue that nothing needs to be done this year.

But others say money needs to start to be raised now to deal with a $151 million judgment in the low-level nuclear waste lawsuit.
