Five Nebraska companies have made this year's Fortune 500 list.

Investment company Berkshire Hathaway Inc. led the Nebraska companies on the list. It ranked 14th with nearly $64 billion in revenue last year.

The ranking was an impressive jump by investor Warren Buffett's company. Berkshire used a rallying stock market to rise from 28th place last year.

Other Omaha-based companies making the magazine's list this year were ConAgra Foods, ranking 84th with revenue of more than $22 billion, and Union Pacific Corporation at 153rd with nearly $12.8 billion. Mutual of Omaha Insurance ranks 396th with $4.39 billion. Peter Kiewit Sons' came in at 485th with $3.38 billion.

Topping the list was Wal-Mart Stores Inc., with sales of more than $259 billion.

Fortune's annual ranking will be published in the magazine's April 5 edition. It is based on the companies' sales figures as reported in financial statements for 2003.
