Doctor Watson Bowes testified in Lincoln Monday that no definitive studies have been done on the safety and efficacy of the procedure banned under a federal law last year.

Bowes said studies could be done to determine the merits of such a procedure, but they have not been done yet.

Bowes testified in a U.S. District Court trial of the federal Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act. The law is being challenged by Bellevue doctor LeRoy Carhart and others.

The Lincoln trial is one of three going on across the nation on the same issues challenging the constitutionality of the new law.
