Lawmakers have begun debate on a bill that would force elementary-only schools to merge with larger K-12 districts.

The debate started Tuesday but senators did not vote on the issue. The measure, LB1048, provides numerous requirements before a school building could be closed.

The school merger bill would affect so-called Class One schools. It was introduced by Education Committee chairman Senator Ron Raikes.

This school year, there are 241 Class One schools in Nebraska. Lawmakers adjourned for the day before voting on whether to advance the bill from first-round debate.
