The University of Nebraska Presidential Search Committee has narrowed the list of candidates for the university's top academic job down to nine.
Co-Chair Keith Olsen said the committee narrowed the list from 12 candidates to nine Tuesday. Olsen said 14 made the last cut at the committee's meeting in March, but two dropped out last week.
Olsen said the committee will likely have one more closed meeting to review the nine candidates and then narrow that list down to about four to recommend to the Nebraska Board of Regents. The candidates will become public at that time. Olsen said the committee hopes to have a final decision by the end of April or early May.
Current university president L. Dennis Smith announced in September that he would retire effective June 30. He then plans to take one year of professional leave and then return to classroom teaching for the first time in 17 years.
