The Lincoln Urban Search and Rescue Task Force is one of only 28 similar units in the nation. They train all year long, but twice a year they get special training in the form of simulations. The training is funded by FEMA to help prepare the 140 member unit for both natural disasters and terrorist attacks.
Saturday's simulation was of an apartment complex that collapsed in an earthquake. The members specifically were working on an area that was supposed to be a collapsed stairwell. There goal was to save the lifes of folks stuck inside.
Many members of the Task Force help in recovery efforts at the World Trade Center in September 2001. However the training and knowledge can also be used for their everyday jobs in Lincoln. They learn how to use special tools and equipment and how to build supports in unstable structures.
