Lincoln Police say a South Lincoln home was burglarized Thursday night while the family was away on vacation. Officer Katie Flood says the home is in the Southern Hills Neighborhood, near 27th street and Old Cheney Road.

Flood says more than $2,500 in property was taken, including a playstation 3 and a laptop. A Red Volkswagon Jetta was also taken and is valued at about $5,000. The plate number of that car is RFR046.

Flood says all three children of the home had all posted on their facebook pages they were going to be out of town on vacation.

Hey, Optimist, there were no other residential burglaries within 1/4 mile of that house during the prior 90 days! It's pretty much a lock that they came there specifically to hit that house because of the facebook postings. Oh, and "What", crooks are out there, always have been and always will be. Making your home a soft target is just unwise, regardless of age.

I cannot believe every post on this board (except Rick) sides with the burglars. You are all blaming the victims. People should not steal. Period. It is never okay, even if the victim posts a sign in the front yard announcing they are gone.

Seems like most people are reading more into this than is really there. So what if they posted on Facebook, craigslist, or anywhere else that they were going on vacation? At this point, no one knows whether it was these posts which tipped off the burglars that this house was easy prey. I might have been a pile of newspapers on the doorstep or just a concidence. Whatever the case, the police will likely find part or all of the loot, catch the thieves and put them in jail. It will serve them right too. An alarm system might have helped the situation, as far as catching them in the act, or scaring them off before they actually got anything of value. On the flip side, have you ever priced installation or the cost to monitor an alarm system? I dont have an alarm system. There is a big screen in the living room and a high dollar computer in my office. I have a loaded 357 next to me on the sofa. I am leaving town this weekend. Or am I? Stop by and find out for yourself.

Get a security system! Then it does not matter whether you post this info online or not! The perpetrator has a good chance of getting caught or thinking twice about burglarizing the home in the first place!

Hey Harry.Did you read the article. They were kids.Whats the difference if you tell someone at school or work. You should be directing your disgust at the losers who ripped this family off.The kids were simply excited about going on vacation.

As long as these stupid people keep putting every bit of personal info online, they are going to be victims. I don't feel sorry for them at all. Why don't they take out an ad in the paper or buy an ad on TV also when they are going to be gone.

OF COURSE they had it posted on facebook. If they only had their "Friends" as friends instead of every person who requests them as a friend this wouldn't matter. Don't blame facebook. They know who can view the information and they put it out there.

they should of never posted that

I'll bet if you asked those kids a week ago, "Are you a smart person, or a stupid person?", they'd be sure to reply "I'm a smart person", but their actions would indicate otherwise. I've seen quite a few news stories about not posting personal info on social networking sites, and so have they.

I grew up in Omaha & have only lived in Lincoln for a couple of years. Recently, my vehicle got broken into and property stolen from it. I have lived in much more sketchy neighborhoods than I do now, and I notice that Lincoln as a whole has MANY more "petty" crimes like larceny. If the police here paid half as much attention to situations like this & patrolling neighborhoods instead of setting up speed traps all over the place, things like this would not be happening as often. I feel for the family who suffered from this incident and I hope that whoever has done this gets caught.
