The union that represents the employees at the Tecumseh State Correctional Institution says they need a safer place to work. On February 29, a staff member was assaulted by an inmate. On March 3, a caseworker was severely beaten by an inmate. The union says the prison is negligent, and the assaults are only escalating.

The Department of Corrections says the union's allegations are unsubstantiated. Spokesperson Steve King says the maximum-security prison implemented a modified lockdown after the assaults. The lockdown was to ensure safety of staff and inmates.
