The Lincoln teen accused of helping torture and kill a cat has been sentenced to probation.

Seventeen-year-old Jacob Weichel was charged in Juvenile court with animal cruelty.

Friday, he was sentenced to probation until he turns 19.

Weichel is also required to complete 50 hours of community service, be involved in individual and family therapy and is subject to substance abuse testing.

The judge also banned Weichel from possessing a weapon or firearm and cannot own any pets during his probation period.

Before sentencing, Judge Reggie Ryder told Weichel that this was "a very serious matter," informing Weichel that if he were to be tried in adult court, the crime would be considered a Class 4 felony and carries a possible sentence of five years in prison.

Authorities say on March 13th, Weichel shot a cat with a bow and arrow, but didn't kill it.

Authorities say another teen, 17-year-old Andrew Kratz of Eagle, picked the cat up by its tail and slammed it against a picnic table, then smashed the animal's head with a log.

The incident was recorded on a cell phone camera and shown to several students at Waverly High School.

Kratz pleaded no contest to animal cruelty and will have his punishment decided later this month.
