Jeremy Haag walked into Otoe County District Court accused of first degree murder. A judge found him guilty of manslaughter.
The victims family said it's not enough.
"I think he should have gotten first degree murder," said Esser's sister, Tiffany Smith.
31-year-old Haag pleaded no contest to a charge waived from first degree murder to manslaughter for shooting Adessa Esser. She was his live-in girlfriend and the mother of his 7 children.
"It's murder to me. He pointed a gun at her. It wasn't an accidental shot," Esser's brother, Craig Esser said.
Court documents show police arrived at the couple's Nebraska City home June 5th. They found both Haag and Esser on the front porch.
Esser had been shot in the cheek.
Haag told police the two were arguing before he accidentally shot her.
"He's contended from the beginning that this was an accidental shooting. He did not realize the gun was loaded. Unfortunately, there was one bullet in the gun that was sufficient to kill his girlfriend," said Haag's Defense Attorney, Jim Mowbray.
The judge set bond at $500,000 with a 10% provision.
Haag could be fined up to $25,000 dollars, or could spend up to 20 years in prison or both.
"He pulled the trigger, he knew exactly what he was doing. He deserves the whole 20 years," said Craig Esser.
Haag's sentencing is scheduled for December 28th.
