It won't be just the balloons, marching bands and floats on display in the annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. The laws of physics will also be on parade.

For the first time in its more than 80-year history, the parade will bypass Broadway as it heads south from Manhattan's Upper West Side to Macy's flagship store in Midtown.

Parts of Broadway have been closed to automobile traffic. That makes it off limits to the parade floats, so participants will use a new, less direct route that includes turns around five corners.

Physics professor Brian Schwartz says the demands of the new route will be a challenge for marching bands and for those handling the huge balloons.
