Vaccine for the H1N1 Flu is scarce and that has many people looking for alternative ways to stay healthy. But look out, some products falsely claim to prevent or even cure H1N1 and they're feeding off the flu scare.
The epidemic of false claims is mostly isolated to the Internet. However, there are lots of false claims out there in cyber space. The Food and Drug Administration has already identified 143 products making false claims on nearly 100 different web sites.
Take a trip to your local pharmacy and you'll find plenty of people who have heard it all when it comes to H1N1. Pharmacist Aaron Kassebaum has even had the dreaded H1N1 Flu.
"It was pretty bad for a while," said Kassebaum.
There's one thing he tells everyone about H1N1 when they ask.
"No, there's nothing out there that's going to cure it," he said.
That's the same message the FDA is sending to web sites claiming to do just that. The FDA has a list of 143 products claiming to cure or protect against the virus. The list includes everything from H1N1 shampoo, to supplements and kits.
"There's not a cure for influenza so if anyone hears that terminology, I would be very skeptical," said Dr. Larry Krebsbach with BryanLGH Medical Center.
There are however supplements that can boost the immune system and provide a natural defense.
"Over the counter wise to try and prevent it, there's Vitamin C, Zinc, ecanasia, things like that can help boost your immune system," said Kassebaum.
Plus, there are medicines that can lessen the effects if you do get H1N1.
"The anti-virus like Tamiflu can help shorten the duration, lessen the severity," said Kassebaum.
The best advice is still to eat right, wash your hands and live healthy.
"There are certain things that can boost the immune system," said Krebsbach. "We know exercise can do that."
And if you can find it, it's a great idea to get both the H1N1 and regular flu shots.
Kassebaum said right now the H1N1 shot is still fairly scare around Lincoln. But with the peak flu season still a month or so off, he says by the middle of December local health officials are confident the H1N1 vaccine will be in better supply.
