When the football team learned they earned a spot in the Holiday Bowl, the band expected to spend the holidays in the Southern California sunshine.

But mother nature had other plans.

Their things were packed and their minds were set on sunshine.

The Cornhusker Marching Band was all but on the bus when they learned their San Diego plans were cancelled.

For most, the idea is now setting in that their final, most anticipated performance is no more.

For UNL Senior Chris Sikkema, it's just another normal day on winter break.

Sikkema says, "I've just been hanging out waiting for the roads to clear."

But it was supposed to be anything but normal. He should to be in San Diego practicing for the Holiday Bowl.

The Cornhusker Drumline member learned just hours before takeoff that the band's bus trip to the west coast was cancelled because of the snowstorm.

Sikkema adds, "Everybody was kind of banking on us going and then that turned into disappointment."

Their cross-country trip had been planned and their bags were already packed and on the bus.

But after a tough decision by band directors, the decision was final: No trip was important enough to risk their safety.

Sikkema says, "It made the most sense to keep everybody safe and I think a lot of people really understood where the directors were coming from even though they might not have been happy with it."

Sikkema says the bowl performance is the most anticipated performance of the year. It's also their final one. "Everybody's expecting to be able to get together and perform one last time, you just kind of hope that there's one more time, but it was taken away from a lot of people."

And for Seniors, it was their last chance to put on the uniform and perform as a team.

Instead, it was just another normal day on winter break.

To add insult to injury, Chris missed out on going home to Iowa for Christmas because he had already decided to go make the trip to San Diego.

Instead, he ended up in Lincoln.

It's a shame that UNL band couldn't go and I know if I was a senior in their band, I'd be horribly disappointed. But the call was made and whether it was due to UNL being cheap or safety concerns, the call was made. I'm glad that the Huskers had SOMEBODY out there to represent them, even a high school band. Would you people complaining about SE have liked for it to be silent when the Huskers made a touchdown, for no one to represent them at the pep-rallys and battle of the bands with Arizona? I feel really bad for the UNL band, but the fact is SE was there and represented Nebraska well, for their situation. Good job, guys.

How embarassing that the University of Nebraska band won't be at the bowl game. Where are the alumni members and alumni association contingency funds to supplement the necessary transportation costs to get the band to the bowl game??? It is equally embarassing that fans would be content with a local high school band representing the University at a bowl game. What's wrong with this picture??? Everything!!!! How embarassing!!!!!!!

Someone needs to contact Larry the Cable Guy! He loves the huskers and would probably get the marching band to the game!

Too bad the money from the donors went to buy luxury vehicles for the regents, president and all the other big shots at UNL. I'm guessing they're flying to the game while the band stays home.

all the money that husker football brings to that university.. they couldnt have left on Sunday.. or have a booster fly them out on one of their jets?? Ridic!! Carl Pelini take advantage of the "generosity" of some boosters why shouldnt the band???

This is a crying shame. If flying them there is not in the Univeristy's budget, some booster should come forward and charter a plane for them! It will not be the same without them there!

That is disappointing, but I'm happy that the Lincoln Southeast Marching Band will be there to represent us! (http://www.lseband.org/)

The Lincoln Southeast marching band from Lincoln flew to the Holiday bowl and is already planning on being in the halftime show at the game. Plus they already know Hail varsity. So they could subsititue for the Unl band.

when were they supposed to leave? was I80 closed at the time, because if not, it wasn't that bad when it reopened. Give some actual facts please. And the band doesn't fly because of the cost between transporting individuals and the equipment.

I think the band should have flown too....how many extra people besides the team/coaches did the univ send????? I think if most of us knew we would be sick...

I think it is really wrong of the university not to sendthe band to the bowl game. I understand that they couldn't safely go by bus, but why were they in the first place. ? I just learned that the cheerleaders flew out today. That is just wrong. Surely some one out there has enough money to charter a flight for the band. I know that the athletic department haqs the money. I am sorry that the athletic department does not appreciate thehard work of the band or realize how much they add to the support of the fans in a game. Shame on Osborne and Perlman. I haven't been this angry since Solich was fired.

I think this is terrible, the University can fly a whole lot of extra people to the game and then leave the band to ride a bus? They represent the school and they do a FINE JOB of it. Why don't they fly?????????

I really think it's a crying shame that the UNL Band won't make the trip to San Diego. But at the same time I think the school administration was correct in calling the trip off due to poor road conditions. It would have been tragic if the bus had slid off the road in the mountain area and band members were killed/hurt. I'm surprised that the band was going by bus? The football team made the trip by air even though it was delayed 45 mins by the weather. Surely, UNL got to have money in the budget to allow the band to make the trip by air. I was hoping that someone would make a "Warren Buffett" gesture and pay for the band's air fares. It would be a sporting gesture if the Arizona band, which is already at the Holiday Bowl, would play the Husker fight song when the Cornhuskers takes the field. Go Big Red!! IDEA!! Why not send a DVD recording to the Holiday Bowl so they can show the UNL Marching Band on their big screen when the Huskers take to the field??

The band has worked very hard and I am sorry the weather has taken this opportunity from them! Hopefully, they can still have a good break with their change of plans and cheer on the Huskers from here at home!
