Nevada officials say a 70-year-old Washington man drove his car into a casino killing two and wounding a dozen others.
One of the women killed in Wednesday's crash was 81-year-old Helen Hindmand of Lincoln.
Kacey Walkowiak, a close relative of Helen's, says, "It was just completely shocking."
Walkowiak says she read about the crash in the paper Thursday. "And then to get a call and that was Helen, it was just unbelievable."
Unbelievable news because Helen was supposed to be in Mesa, Arizona.
Walkowiak adds, "When they say she was in this casino and there was this accident, first of all, no it's not her she's not in Nevada, she's in Arizona."
But that day she was in Nevada, and in the wrong place at the wrong time. And for her sons and grand kids, the loss is immense. "Helen was a very big part of this family, the head of the family."
That family extended far beyond the Hindmand family tree. Helen spent the majority of her life as an in-home daycare provider and built life-long relationships with those she cared for. "(For the) majority of them she attended their high school graduation, she attended their college graduation, she attended their weddings."
Helen was also a member of the Teammates mentor program and the Red Hat Society. She was known as 'everybody's Grandma.' Walkowiak says it might take some time for the loss to set in. "Once she gets here, I think it's going to be another big reality check for the family to see her in person."
But in the meantime, family members say they're looking to God for comfort.
Walkowiak says, "There has to be a reason why He took her now and we're just trying to keep focusing on that."
Walkowiak says the family isn't angry at the man that caused the crash.
She says they'd feel just as bad had the roles been reversed with Helen behind the wheel.
Helen's body is scheduled to return to Lincoln on Monday.
Family members say funeral arrangements have not yet been made.
