On March 12th the Nebraska-Southwest Iowa Chapter of the Muscular Dystrophy Association will hold its 12th Annual Gala and auction at the Mid-America Center in Council Bluffs. This year’s theme will be “Caring for a Cure” and will highlight the faces of those affected by neuromuscular disease. The evening will include a sit-down dinner, silent and live auctions, a key-note speaker and dancing. The chairpersons for this annual event are Mark and Jackie Dix of Council Bluffs. Their connection with MDA began in 1996, when their son Zach was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.
The proceeds from this event will provide services to the 700 families in our area affected by any of 43 neuromuscular diseases. These services include funding for national research programs, a local clinic held at the University of Nebraska Medical Center and support groups. These funds will also be used to help send children ages 6 to 17 affected by neuromuscular disease to MDA summer camp absolutely free of charge. Camp is a place where barriers do not exist and love, friendship and acceptance are in abundance for youngsters who are faced with the daily challenges of neuromuscular disease.
