The state treasurer's office is seeking to return $85 million in unclaimed property to more than 250,000 Nebraskans.
The office recently publicized the names of people owed money or property and will do so again in the fall. A list of those owed unclaimed property may be found on the office's Web site, which can be accessed through the link below.
The office has returned about $43.5 million since 2007.
Under state law, the state treasurer is responsible for handling unclaimed property. Examples include health claim payments, dividends, utility deposits, life insurance proceeds, wages, stocks, outstanding checks, safety deposit boxes and unused gift certificates.
A measure before the state Legislature would have voters decide in November whether to eliminate the state treasurer's office.

Does the treasurer's office make any effort to contact the businesses or government agencies that have unclaimed property? I realize they can not track down every person on the list but some of the businesses are easy to locate not to mention the NE state agencies that are located a few blocks down the street. Here's just a few of the listings that jumped out at me when I searched on Nebraska. So, umm... instead of providing us with a useful link, you're just going to say "Go to the site for more details"? After searching around a bit (you know, investigating, like reporters did once upon a time), I discovered that you can find the unclaimed property page here: http://www.treasurer.org/up/index.asp See, was that really so hard, that you couldn't have done it???
This article is to make us think twice about getting rid of the state treasurers position. It's their way of making us as Nebraskan's think that we will lose without it.
