Shane Krause was diagnosed in January as having Squamous Cell Metastatic Carcinoma. In simple terms, Shane has cancer at the base of his tongue.
While Shane's insurance will cover most of the medical bills, some things are not covered. Shane has some high dollar prescriptions which are not covered. When Shane's health after radiation and chemo therapy will force him to take time from work, that too is not covered. This money will help Shane and his wife Nikki with these expenses. If these treatments don't work, Shane may lose his tongue and part of his throat.
Rachel Krause, Shane's sister worked out an arrangement with the Lincoln Stars hockey team, to purchase tickets and share some of the proceeds with Shane. Rachel says that friends, church members and family have all been wonderful helping get the word out about Shane's condition.
According to Steve Zoucha, the Lincoln Stars' Operations Manager, this fundraisers are something the Stars do with increasing frequency.
Zoucha says this time, it was different. Normally, we set aside 100 tickets for groups like this. Rachel did an incredible job organizing this and sold just over 400 tickets. Zoucha says that this effort will raise over $3,000 for Shane.
Zoucha says that the Stars were very impressed with the response . They offered Shane and his family an opportunity to tour the Icebox, the Stars' locker room, a chance to talk to the players and the coach. Most impressive to Shane and his family was the size of the weight room training area. Shane and Nilkki's son even got to ride on the Zamboni before the game.
Shane was on the radio at the game doing an interview the radio voice for the Stars, Mike Melbye, during play by play. Shane was in the Marines and talked about their support during his radio interview. Shane says that he was surprised with the number of marines and co-workers and friends who purchased tickets on Shane's behalf. There were many people Shane never met who bought tickets too.
Melbye shared after the game that this was something important for the kids. Melbye said that this will be a great memory for the entire family after Shane beats this. Mostly, this was for Shane and Niklki.
