Fez the 3-Banded Armadillo and Lincoln Children's Zoo Events
Lincoln, Neb. Fez the 3-banded armadillo visited the 10/11 morning show on Friday. And John Chapo, president of the Lincoln Children's Zoo, told us what's happening at the zoo.

The Lincoln Children’s Zoo is a destination of fun and learning for the entire family. The many special events to be held in July at the Zoo feature everything from the characters from the PBS Kids television series “Super Why” to conserving the rarest large cat on the earth – the beautiful and rare Amur Leopard. The Zoo is open daily 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM, except every Wednesday is a Wild Wednesday and the Zoo is open 10:00 AM – 8:00 PM.
Here is a complete list of the many great happenings at the Lincoln Children’s Zoo in July.
Friday July 2: Half Point Day
Visit the Zoo at the half way point of the year - at noon on July 2nd 182.5 days have gone by and 182.5 days remain in the year. Explore the Zoo in search of its many half way points and see if you can find them all.
Sunday, July 4: The Zoo is open 10:00 AM – 3:00 P.M.
The Zoo will close 2 hours early on the 4th of July to allow Zoo employees to celebrate the 4th with their families and friends.
Tuesday July 6: New York Life Child ID Event
Join New York Life at the Zoo from 11am-1:30pm to receive valuable safety tips and learn what you can do to create a happier, safer environment for your children. Get fingerprinting & photos for child identification cards along with video and voice identification recordings. Parents retain all child identification materials.
Wednesday July 7: Wild Wednesday “Opening the Gates: A Cultural Experience”
For the first Wild Wednesday of July experience the diversity of the Lincoln community by participating in a variety of multi-cultural activities. Visit different booths that represent the many cultures from the area and create multi-cultural crafts. Entertainment provided by Lance Schupbach.
Saturday July 10: Super Why! & Secure Recyclers
Bring the kids to the Zoo to meet the Super Why! characters Whyatt Beanstalk, Little Red Riding Hood, Princess Pea and Pig. Super Why! is an educational TV series that helps kids ages 3 to 6 with the critical skills they need to learn and enjoy reading. The event is sponsored by NET (Nebraska Educational Telecommunications). http://pbskids.org/superwhy/#
Secure Recyclers, a computer and electronics recycling company (E-cycler), will also be setting up a drop-off station in front of the Zoo to collect unused, outdated, or unwanted electronics free of charge. Help conserve the environment and decrease landfill use by bringing your old electronics to Secure Recyclers at the Zoo. www.securerecyclers.com

Sunday July 11: Otter Day
Learn about one of Nebraska’s endangered species, the river otter. The Nebraska Game & Parks Commission will be on hand and zookeepers will be presenting otter demonstrations throughout the day. Take part in a river otter scavenger hunt and enter to win an Adoption Package from the Zoo.
Monday July 12: Wild Hair Day
Who can wear the wildest hairdo to the Zoo? Everyone who visits the Zoo on July 12 with a wacky hairdo receives 50¢ off a train ticket for the Z.O.&O. Railroad.
Wednesday July 14: Wild Wednesday “Zoo through the Seasons”
On this Wild Wednesday learn what animals do in the winter after the Zoo closes. See a slide show of animals through all the seasons, create nature creatures and participate in outdoor observations, conversation starters and nature circles.
Friday July 16: National Hot Dog Month Celebration
July is National Hot Dog Month, and the Lincoln Children’s Zoo will be celebrating with hot dog specials all day at the Safari Café on July 16.
Sunday July 18: Amur Leopard Day
Help the Zoo’s efforts to conserve one of the most endangered large cats on earth, the Amur Leopard. Anyone who purchases an Amur leopard t-shirt from the Feline Conservation Center (all proceeds support Amur leopard conservation) and wears it to the Zoo on this day receives a free actual footprint of “Mikula” one of the Zoo’s rare Amur Leopards on a certificate plus a free train ride on the Z.O&O Railroad . July 19 - 22: National Zookeeper Week
Celebrate the hard work and effort of our zookeepers during National Zookeeper Week. Special animal demonstrations will be held throughout the week to show how zookeepers care for the Zoo’s animals. Each day will feature different kid’s activities that focus on various aspects of a zookeeper’s job. If your child dreams of working at a Zoo, this is a can’t miss week of activities.
Wednesday July 21: Wild Wednesday “Sensory Safari”
Use your five senses to guide you on this safari - feel it, smell it, see it, hear it and taste it. Also learn about the different ways animals use their senses.
Monday July 26: Sundae Monday
The Safari Café will have ice cream sundaes on special all day.
Wednesday July 28: Wild Wednesdays “Bug Buddies”
For the last Wild Wednesday of the month learn how to hunt and classify bugs and participate in fun activities such as building worm holes. Learn more about insects by participating in a zookeeper chat at Laura’s Butterfly Pavilion.
Saturday July 31: Cotton Candy Day
Ever wonder how cotton candy is made? Come to the Zoo to see how this delicious treat is produced, and find out what fresh cotton candy tastes like. 1-3pm
Thursday July 15 & 29: Thirsty Thursdays
Drink specials all day at the Safari Café.
